7 Reasons You Hate Marketing And How to Learn to Love It - Kathy Caprino

7 Reasons You Hate Marketing â€" And How to Learn to Love It In ramping up my marketing consulting work with women consultants, practitioners, and entrepreneurs these past months, I’ve heard these words over and over:  â€œI hate marketing.”  or, more specifically…  â€œI hate promoting myself.” It’s an amazing thing to observe â€" that so many women today view marketing as sleazy, embarrassing, scary, or simply overwhelming. Women tell me that marketing and networking are deeply challenging (and scare the pants off of them) for the following reasons (these are exact quotes):  â€œI just feel like that sleazy used car salesman I hate.”  â€œI don’t know how to go up to people and share what I do.”  â€œI feel so intrusive to just blurt out that I can help someone.”  â€œI’m too shy to do what’s necessary.”  â€œI don’t understand how to do this â€" it’s all so overwhelming.”  â€œI think I have to be like her (an aggressive, in-your-face networker) to be successful, and I just can’t.”  â€œI love the work I do â€" why do I have to do this other marketing stuff?” If these statements resonate with you, help is out there for you! I’m here to tell you â€" marketing is not what you think.   And the sooner you can embrace your “inner marketer,” and learn to love her, the happier and more fulfilled you’ll be in your work.  What Is Marketing? First, marketing is not the hairy monster you’ve imagined.   It’s simply about letting people know you exist â€" via any and all of the many neat methods and forms available today â€" so that you can be of powerful and joyful service to the world.   It’s about sharing your unique messages in an authentic, compelling way so that the people you love to serve can find you, and identify that you’re the right one to help them.   Marketing is about bringing yourself to the market you want to help, and communicating, “I’m really awesome at what I do and offer, and I LOVE my work.   May I be of service to you?” How to Embrace Your “Inner Marketer” Let’s break this down to look at what’s really beneath the challenges you face in marketing.   The key marketing obstacles for women fall into the same four categories that I uncovered in my national research with career women.   (For more about the 12 hidden crises working women face today, and how to overcome them, see my   book Breakdown, Breakthrough.) These categories represent levels at which we interact with ourselves and our world, and can be characterized as either empowered or disempowered, based on each individual’s specific situation, in: Your Relationship with Yourself Your Relationship with the World Your Relationship with Others Your Relationship with Your Higher Self These same relationship categories apply to your marketing endeavors and marketing persona.   Here’s what you need to understand to become a comfortable and easy marketer and networker who likes it: Your Relationship with Yourself Confidence and Worthiness: The key marketing challenges for women are confidence and worthiness.   Deep down, many are not quite sure they’re great at their work, and don’t have the self-confidence to come out say “I’m very talented at this work, and would love to be of service to you!” Tip: You need to step up to embrace how great you are in your work.   And if you don’t feel you offer high-quality products and services, then you need a shift.   Identify the new skills, talents and experiences that will bring your work to the next level.   Go out and get those skills and experiences.   Don’t wait. Your Relationship with Others Two key marketing challenges come up here:  speaking up with power and authority, and connecting deeply with others in your communications and your interactions. Speaking Up: Many women are challenged in speaking up about and for themselves with power, authority, and command.   Tip: If you believe that speaking out about your gifts and talents means you’re bragging, think again.   How can people know about your work if you don’t tell them about it â€" in your speaking, writing, and interactions? Release this misguided belief that talking about your work is pushy or arrogant. Connecting: Getting out there in the world with your products and services means you have to connect to people from the heart, help them find their pain points and show how your work addresses want they want most.   People do business with people they know, like and trust, so youve got to give them the opportunity to know you. Tip: If you’re shy and uncomfortable about connecting and interacting with people, get out there and do more of it.   If you’re too self-focused and self-limiting, you’ll find it hard to make the authentic connections you need to bring your work and business out there in a bigger way. Relationship with the World: The two core challenges here are: Money and Service Embracing Money: Many women are simply disempowered around their finances, and around earning, managing, and investing their money.   Often, they can’t seem to establish great fees/prices for their work, and or command these fees on a consistent basis.   Further, many women dont have the financial planning experience to make their marketing efforts profitable. Tip: Get financial help!   First, you must have a very clear sense of what your products and services are worth in the marketplace â€" not what you think they SHOULD be worth, but the true and perceived value of the outcomes you give to others.   Then you must acquire the confidence and strength to obtain these prices and fees, and negotiate powerfully for them when needed.   Secondly, dont overspend on your business (on marketing or other initiatives) before youve learned how to earn. Being of Service: You need to know how you want to serve the world, and how you do it best, above and beyond the competition.   If you don’t know how you’re different from your competitors, the marketplace won’t know either, and you won’t get the business you want. Tip: Name and claim the niche you serve best and are most joyful at working in.   Find ways to become an expert and truly gifted in the areas that light you up the most, and communicate your stand-apart qualities. Relationship with Your Higher Self Finally, the two essential marketing blocks here in terms of accessing your most expansive, highest self in your work are: Finding Role Models and Being Open to Angels (the human kind â€" and others, if you wish!) Finding Role Models: If you think that the only way to do marketing is the sleazy, intrusive and shameless kind, you’re just stuck in a misguided story that’s holding you back.   You need a new set of role models that you can see, hear, and follow, who are doing it the way you want to. Tip: Find fabulous visual role models of marketers who are doing it the way you love.   Follow my “marketingpeeps” list on twitter (@kathycaprino) for a start.   These men and women are just a sampling of amazing communicators and marketers who do great work in the most authentic, heart-aligned and compelling way possible on the planet! Opening  to Angels: If you hate marketing, you’re going to struggle in your business and creative ventures.   It’s that simple.   So get help to overcome your fears about it.   Be open to the angels that come in your life who want to help you move forward.   Find people you trust and respect, and ask them for their critique (yes, critique!), advice and support.   You don’t have to do this alone.   Angels are waiting in the wings to help you. *   *   *   * Learning how to get yourself out there and share your authentic messages with the world â€" and powering up to deal with this success outcomes that will follow â€" is one of the most enlivening and exciting processes you can undertake.  Are you ready to embrace your Inner Marketer? I think Yes!

The Story of My Life, or Why I Stopped Pounding (my head against the) Pavement - When I Grow Up

The Story of My Life, or Why I Stopped Pounding (my head against the) Pavement - When I Grow Up Image taken from the cover of Carol Burnett Sings: Let Me Entertain You. The phone rang on Friday night at 10p, as expected. The first rehearsal was scheduled to start in 12 1/2 hours. I had arrived  home  just 20 minutes before,  after spending 90 minutes at a 2nd callback for the lead in a musical revival (of sorts). 30 minutes prior to that  2nd callback  I spent an hour ( $15) warming up. The night before the 2nd callback I spent 2 1/2 hours learning 2 songs 2 scenes ( reviewing 2 other scenes) as The Director was not, as we were previously told, ready to cast the leads and we would have to come back with the new material, ready to play. The night before that I spent 2 1/2 hours at the  1st callback. The night before that I spent 30 minutes ( $15) warming up prior to a short audition. The night before that I spent an hour preping for said audition, while the week prior to the audition I had 2 voice lessons ( spent $150) to discover what to sing as well as prepping it. That same week I was emailed by The Director as to what I should prepare to put my best foot forward. A few weeks before that The Producer looked me in the face at the production meeting where the show was proposed and said, Were looking to do this show for you. Which brings us to the ringing of the phone. It was  the Director calling someone Ive done 2 shows with for the same theater company, someone who Ive assisted behind the scenes so she can get some help with growing the thater company, someone Ive come to consider my friend personally. It was like she read from The Script. Yknow, the one taken from Why Michelle Just Doesnt Want To Be A Part Of This Business No More. It goes a little something like that call: First off, I want to thank you so much for giving us so much of your time this week. I gave Luke the thumbs down. He rubbed my back. You know how much we think youre talented, and youre just so unique. You really showed us this week, though, that your acting skills go far beyond what we thought you could do originally. You gave The Choreographer chills when you sang Usher From The Mezzanine really. (Beat) But weve decided to go in a different direction. I asked her who she cast. The Ingenue, she said. I silently grieved for character actresses everywhere when I learned that a role that Carol Burnett originated went to a petite, blond soprano who cant consistently belt. The reason we kept you so long tonight after the other contenders for the part (including The Ingenue) were sent away, I was asked to come into the room to read more and tap dance  (ALONE!) with The Choreographer was that we were honestly thinking about double casting this role, but we realized it would have been a nightmare for me and The Choreographer. We do have another role wed like to offer you, but well understand if you want to sit this one out. Yes, please, sitting out sounds good. I patted myself on the back for saying No, although it was little comfort at the time. Although Im itching to get on stage, I couldnt bear the thought of seeing The Ingenue do my part at every rehearsal. Im also not willing to stretch myself so thin for another role, committing myself to 12 hours of rehearsal/week for 3 weeks on top of my coaching my day job. So, here I stand, Multiple Character Woman. Thats what Ive been cast in for 3 out of 3 shows in the last 2 years. Dont get me wrong I love the chance to create new characters, to inhabit multiple people in one show, to get the laughs. But The Script hurts, and it hurts because it has said, Youre unique, and youre talented, and you bring to the table something that nobody else does. (Beat) But we dont know what to do with you. It hurts because its also said, Theres a role out there for you. Somewhere. And  Im going to find it. Im 31 years old. Im still waiting. The Director told me that shes committed to finding a show that the theater company can do that will showcase me and my talents. I dont believe her. I honestly now feel like Im She That Can Not Be Cast (As A Lead). If a role that was written as a vehicle for Carol Burnett is given to an ingenue, I certainly have no idea what The Role For Me could possibly ever be. This is where I wish I was a singing, writing comedianne, so I can create that role. This is also where I wish I was able to control my artistic passion not leave it in the hands of others. Without being given a role, I cant perform. Artists can paint and writers can write and dancers can dance when they please, but musical theater performers have to wait to be granted their wish. And while I know I DO have the ability to create my own performance, and I can take classes until the cows come home, its not the same as doing what I love performing. I wanted this post to go into all the reasons why this was a positive experience for me: what I learned, what was reinforced. But honestly, Im not ready for that yet. Im still sad. Im still grieving. Im still bitter and not sure how and when I want to move forward. Thankfully coaching fills a huge space in me that being on stage used to take up, but I know Im not fully me unless Im able to perform. One of my clients who went to school for musical theater but hasnt performed in years said to me this week, When people ask what Ive been up to, I can tell them about my desk job and I can tell them about my marriage. But wheres the Me in that? Im still trying to find my way to The Me.

Choose Your Roommate Wisely

Choose Your Roommate Wisely Choose Your Roommate WiselyHome sweet home is something we all strive for. That may be defined by coming home to the sweet smell of your favorite scent, warm coffee or perhaps, that elusive tote full of laundry you put off all week. These scents may all tie into exactly what lifestyle you would like to lead. Choosing the right housemate, or perhaps no housemate at all is crucial in finding your prized home sweet home. There are many reasons to consider a roommate. For example, financially it is easier splitting bills, this also splits the headaches trying to remember when the electric, Netflix, rent, water and garbage is due. Not to mention other worries that wreak havoc on your psyche. Roommates are great ways to split up chores, groceries and costs for other things like microwaves and toasters two major life saving appliances for your 21st century collegiate.Considerations? On the positive side a roommate or perhaps, roommates can help save money and help alleviate some additional stresses in each others lives. On the more pessimistic side of things, roommates can add stress into each others lives if not chosen wisely. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a partner in your new humble abodeOne, do you have boundaries and can this roommate accept them?On the flip side, do you lack boundaries and will you be the cause of future annoyances? Are you all able to share responsibilities responsibly?Do you enjoy the company of others?Do you share well with others?Define your line on certain issues. Dont allow yourself to get swept under the rug and share your concerns with confidence.Keep in mind that your best friend may not be your best roommate. Think about how much time you spend together and how often you may get on each others nerves. Does time apart do you good? Could you landsee yourself possibly sharing a bathroom with this person and not wanting to rip out every follicle of hair on your head?Dont be afraid to lay out how you would like things to run in your shared home, but be open to change, and be willing to compromise. However, if you see yourself living happier alone, there is no problem to that. Life is a journey and if you best trek it alone, so be it
